Stephanie Branton pursued modeling despite the limited opportunities available in her Newfoundland hometown. Convinced that she needed a larger market to build a career, she relocated to Toronto and found work in print campaigns, commercials and music videos. The move reflected the persistence she later emphasized when discussing her career: people back home had doubted the plan, but she was determined to give modeling a serious chance.
A job at a Playboy Golf event in Toronto provided the unexpected introduction she needed. A casting director noticed Branton and, surprised that she was not already a Playmate, encouraged her to test with photographer Josh Ryan in Los Angeles. She took the opportunity seriously enough to relocate again, this time leaving Canada for California and entering Playboy through its digital modeling operation.
Branton initially worked as a Playboy Coed, appearing in several online pictorials and videos before progressing to the magazine. She was also included in Playboy’s “Northern Star” series alongside other Canadian models. Her connection to the publication had roots much earlier than the casting event: her father subscribed to Playboy, and she remembered becoming fascinated with the magazine and Hugh Hefner while growing up.
For her Playmate pictorial, Playboy sent Branton to Louisiana’s Nottoway Plantation and Resort. The Southern setting gave her a character to inhabit in front of the camera, something she particularly enjoyed about modeling. Although she described herself as shy and quiet at times in everyday life, she found it easy to become more extroverted during shoots and joked that Louisiana made her feel like an honorary Southern belle.
Branton took particular pride in representing Newfoundland within Playboy. She pointed to fellow Newfoundlander Shannon Tweed as an earlier example of someone from the province reaching the magazine and expected considerable excitement when her own issue appeared back home. By then, the decision to leave Newfoundland had carried her through Toronto commercial work, Playboy’s online features, the “Northern Star” series and finally to a full Playmate pictorial photographed in Louisiana.
