Playboy named her its December 2014 Playmate at 25. Her appearance came during Playboy's contemporary era of international and digital publishing.

Elizabeth Ostrander had already built an international modeling career before Playboy entered the picture. Her work took her through Paris, Greece and South Africa, giving her several years of experience abroad before an impulsive decision brought her to San Francisco. She had never visited the city, but with a friend there and an appetite for change, she bought a one-way ticket, packed a bag and started again on the West Coast.
San Francisco introduced Ostrander to sailing, which soon grew from a new skill into one of the defining interests of her life. She eventually bought a 41-foot Islander Freeport yacht and set out across the Pacific, sailing from San Francisco to Hawaii and continuing as far as Bora Bora. Life at sea appealed to her artistic instincts as much as her adventurous side: an enthusiastic painter and sketcher, she was fascinated by the constantly changing colors of the ocean and sky.
Playboy became a serious ambition during that Pacific voyage. With little access to news while offshore, Ostrander had brought along a collection of vintage Playboy issues. By the time she reached Molokai, Hawaii, she had decided that becoming a Playmate would be her next major challenge. She particularly admired the magazine’s photography from the 1960s and 1970s and felt an affinity with its more natural aesthetic.
Ostrander had relatively little experience posing nude when she arrived for her Playmate shoot. Photographer Josh Ryan helped her become comfortable with the assignment, and Playboy gave her another distinction beyond the centerfold by placing her on the cover. Ostrander recognized that Playmates were not routinely given that position and regarded the cover as a particular honor.
Travel remained central to the way Ostrander imagined her future. She wanted to continue sailing internationally while pursuing acting, with the fantasy of eventually playing a Bond girl among the ambitions she discussed at the time. Her Playboy appearance therefore arrived after an unusually independent sequence of experiences: professional modeling across three continents, an unplanned relocation to San Francisco, learning to sail and crossing the Pacific aboard her own yacht.
