Mei-Ling Lam grew up in a small Maine community where her family operated a Chinese restaurant, and competition entered her life early. She began participating in beauty pageants as a child, collecting several state titles before becoming Miss Maine Teen USA in 2001 and competing at Miss Teen USA. Dance was equally serious: she trained for roughly a decade in disciplines including ballet, pointe, jazz, tap and lyrical dance and earned recognition in Dance America competition.
Modeling developed naturally from that pageant background. Lam continued working in front of the camera and was named a Maxim Hometown Hottie in 2010. Away from modeling, she developed an entrepreneurial streak influenced in part by growing up around her father’s restaurant business. By the time Playboy featured her, she had business interests that included both a restaurant and a tea house and was already considering what kind of venture she might build next.
A fashion-photographer friend provided Lam’s route into Playboy by taking test photographs and submitting them for consideration. She subsequently traveled to Los Angeles for additional tests, with Hugh Hefner approving her after the third. Stephen Wayda photographed her centerfold, and her selection made Lam the first Playmate from Maine. Although the pictorial was her first nude modeling assignment, her previous experience with pageants and professional shoots helped make the unfamiliar setting less intimidating.
Sports and gaming occupied much of Lam’s recreational time. She was an enthusiastic Boston Celtics supporter and devoted ESPN viewer, particularly during the era of the team’s celebrated Big Three. Video games had been an interest since childhood, when she played Nintendo racing titles such as Mario Kart with her brother; as an adult, Gran Turismo became another favorite, alongside an enthusiasm for fast cars.
Lam later lived in Atlanta with her husband, former Atlanta Falcons running back Ken Oxendine, while maintaining her connection with Playboy through visits to the Mansion. She also contributed the Dinner With Mei-Ling column to Playboy’s Playground, an especially appropriate assignment for someone whose family background and own entrepreneurial interests were closely connected with food and hospitality.
