Ashley Hobbs grew up in Kailua on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, where modeling entered her life unusually early. As a child, she worked as an extra in a Barbie commercial, although professional modeling was not yet a serious ambition. Friends later encouraged her to submit photographs to Playboy after she turned 18. Hobbs initially declined, but when another friend made the same suggestion about a year later, she decided to attend a casting at the Playboy Mansion.
Four weeks after that Los Angeles casting, Playboy invited Hobbs back to test for Playmate. Her centerfold session with Arny Freytag provided a memorable introduction to the demands of the magazine’s photography. After arriving late and skipping breakfast, Hobbs spent roughly 20 minutes holding a pose beneath hot studio lights and fainted on set. She recovered and completed the elaborate Christmas-themed centerfold that accompanied her December feature.
Before modeling became her primary occupation, Hobbs worked as a supervisor for a nonprofit organization providing support services to people with cerebral palsy. At the same time, she was studying communications at a local college. Her Playboy commitments eventually prompted a move to Los Angeles, although she originally expected to return to Hawaii and complete her degree once the immediate demands of the magazine had passed.
Opportunities in modeling instead kept Hobbs in California. She spent time living at the Bunny House and became close with other Playmates while participating in Playboy-related appearances and commitments. Her Hawaiian background remained an important part of her identity: her middle name, Ku'ulei, means “beloved,” and she recalled particularly strong support from friends and family in Kailua when her Playboy issue appeared.
Hobbs later added screen work to her credits. She appeared in Playmate Casting Call: The Mansion and subsequently had a role in the 2016 comedy Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. She was also credited in the 2021 series Cocktails with Dimples and the Beard.
