Francesca Frigo came to the United States at 15, when her parents sent her from Venezuela to Miami to learn English at an American school. Her father envisioned an eventual role for her in the family oil business and encouraged her to study international business. Frigo preferred fashion, however, and enrolled in a fashion merchandising program in South Beach, establishing an independent professional direction while remaining in Miami.
Playboy first entered the picture through photographer Jarmo Pohjaniemi, who approached Frigo on a Miami beach and gave her his card. She was interested but, at 19, decided she was not ready to pursue the opportunity, particularly given the reaction she expected from her family.
