Playboy named her its January 2006 Playmate at 19. Her appearance came in the 2000s, as Playboy's print tradition began to share space with an expanding online presence.

Athena Lundberg had wanted to become a Playboy Playmate since she was 16, but the opportunity ultimately came through television rather than a conventional modeling submission. She competed on Playboy TV’s Sexy Girls Next Door and won the chance to test for the magazine. Lundberg initially expected that success might lead to a Playboy Special Editions pictorial; instead, the test resulted in her selection for the magazine itself while she was still 19.
