Kimberley Stanfield had been modeling since infancy, appearing in local catalogues long before Playboy entered the picture. Growing up in Vancouver, she also developed a strong athletic background through cheerleading, basketball, volleyball and soccer. She considered cosmetology school and trained as a lifeguard, suggesting that modeling was only one of several possible directions open to her.
Playboy gave Stanfield a much larger stage than the catalogue work she knew from home. Even so, she did not describe herself as someone naturally drawn to attention. At the time, she said that her real ambition was to become an elementary school teacher, a striking contrast with the highly visible world she had just entered.
