Terry Ryan’s pictorial marked an important turning point in Playboy’s first year. Until then, the magazine had largely relied on finished photographs purchased from independent photographers and commercial sources. For Ryan’s session, Playboy took direct control of the process for the first time, supervising the photography rather than simply acquiring an existing layout.
The magazine made that change part of the story. A six-page feature titled “Photographing a Playmate” preceded the centerfold and showed how the session was assembled behind the scenes. Art Director Art Paul appeared in the photographs arranging lights and helping direct the shoot, giving readers an unusually candid look at Playboy beginning to shape its own photographic language.
The surviving material credits the pictorial to Hal Adams, whose clean studio approach suited the magazine’s increasingly polished ambitions. Ryan was presented with relatively restrained lighting and posing, allowing expression, posture and composition to carry the image rather than elaborate scenery.
