Marilyn Waltz was an American glamour and nude model. Born Marilyn Ardith Waltz on November 5, 1931, in Waukesha, Wisconsin, she has also been credited as Margaret Scott. Playboy named her its April 1954 Playmate at 22. Her appearance dates from the magazine's formative 1950s, when the Playmate format was still taking shape.
Waltz had natural breasts, blue eyes and blond hair. Her measurements are 36-23-34.
Marilyn Waltz already had an established pin-up career when Playboy began using her photographs during the magazine’s formative years. She modeled for other men’s publications, pursued singing and commercial acting, and briefly ventured into film with the little-known 1954 feature Love Me Madly. Her popularity with Playboy readers was immediate enough that the magazine returned to her photographs more than once, making her one of the very few women to appear as a Playmate three times.
The most intriguing part of that record took decades to untangle. Her first appearance had been credited not to Marilyn Waltz but to Margaret Scott, and for more than forty years Playboy treated the two names as belonging to different women. While preparing The Playmate Book in the mid-1990s, Hugh Hefner and researchers noticed the striking resemblance and eventually established that Margaret Scott and Waltz were the same model. The discovery transformed what had looked like separate early centerfolds into a single recurring Playboy career.
Even the photography carried a small mystery. Archivists had long assumed that Hal Adams, who photographed Waltz’s later Playboy work, had also created the April 1954 image. Adams rejected that attribution, explaining that its degree of nudity was inconsistent with his own preference for more suggestive, partially clothed compositions. The unidentified authorship adds another layer to an era when Playboy often acquired existing commercial pin-up material rather than producing every session itself.
Waltz eventually left glamour modeling behind and built a very different professional life. After marrying Breck Jordan in 1958 and raising two children, she became involved in real estate and later owned a successful firm in Southern California. She moved to Oregon in 1993, continued working in the field around Medford and retired in 1996.
Waltz died in 2006 at the age of 75. Her place in Playboy history rests on more than three appearances: the long-running Margaret Scott mystery offers a revealing glimpse into the loose cataloguing, pseudonyms and recycled photography of the magazine’s earliest years. One woman had been hiding in plain sight across several foundational issues, and it took Playboy more than four decades to realize it.
