Jean Jani was an American actress, glamour and nude model. Born Norma Jean Jani on October 31, 1931, in Dayton, Ohio, she has also been credited as Norma J Jani. Playboy named her its July 1957 Playmate at 25. Her appearance dates from the magazine's formative 1950s, when the Playmate format was still taking shape.
Jani had natural breasts, brown eyes and brown hair. Her measurements are 38-23-34.
Jean Jani’s Playboy story was built around aviation, though later accounts complicated the original magazine version. Playboy presented her as a young stewardess encountered in flight, but subsequent biographical material identified her as a United Airlines reservations clerk whose pictorial was staged around the glamorous image of air travel. Peter Gowland photographed the centerfold, leaning into that theme with a polished, playful presentation that suited the jet-age fantasy Playboy wanted to sell.
The distinction mattered because the photographs had consequences beyond the page. After the pictorial appeared, United Airlines terminated Jani’s employment. What Playboy treated as a lighthearted transformation from airline girl to centerfold therefore carried a very real cost, turning an otherwise glamorous assignment into a sharp collision between private employment rules and public modeling work.
Her tastes, at least as Playboy recorded them, were firmly of the period. Jani was saving for a Thunderbird and listened to Frank Sinatra, Harry Belafonte and Jackie Gleason records, small details that place her naturally inside the late-1950s world the pictorial was designed to evoke. The airline motif, the music and the dream car together gave the feature a distinctly modern, mobile feel even if the reality behind the uniform was less glamorous than the copy suggested.
Decades later, the Playboy chapter resurfaced unexpectedly when Jani’s grown daughter gave her a first-edition volume containing her photographs. The gift prompted her to reconnect with that part of her past and eventually accept invitations to conventions and gatherings of former models and fans. Her story consequently came full circle: a single shoot that once cost her a job later became the reason she was welcomed back into a community that still remembered the photographs.
