Leola Bell reached Playboy after following a route that would have seemed unlikely during her childhood. Raised in Rockville, Maryland, by a Seventh-Day Adventist minister, she grew up in a household where makeup was not permitted and nude modeling would have been far outside family expectations. Even so, Bell had wanted to model from an early age and began creating her own opportunities after leaving home for college in Miami at 18.
Bikini modeling on the trade-show circuit eventually brought her closer to Playboy. Bell entered a Playboy Golf event in Miami and won a trip to California that included a visit to the Playboy Mansion. She continued working as a caddy for another year before representatives at Studio West invited her to test for Playmate. Her first reaction was to call her mother, and although Bell acknowledged that her parents would not have chosen modeling for her, she described them as loving and supportive.
Stephen Wayda photographed Bell’s centerfold, and her selection carried an unusual historical distinction: she became Playboy’s 700th Playmate. By then she was living in Palm Beach but spending considerable time at the Playboy Mansion, where she quickly formed friendships with other Playmates and became more involved in the magazine’s wider social world.
Sports and books occupied much of Bell’s time away from modeling. She followed both the Miami Heat and Miami Dolphins and enjoyed watching games with friends at sports bars, while quieter evenings often meant reading Stephen King, whose work she said she had explored extensively. She also preferred traditional courtesy in dating, placing value on manners, conversation and small gestures rather than elaborate displays.
Charitable work became another priority after her Playboy appearance. Bell joined fellow Playmate Amanda Cerny in relief work connected with Haiti and spoke about volunteering with the Humane Society. Her interest in animal welfare was personal as well as philanthropic: she had adopted her cat, Green Bean, from a shelter, regularly took in stray cats and hoped eventually to use income from modeling to open an animal shelter of her own.
