Grace Kim came to Playboy from a professional life that combined education, writing and the video-game industry. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from UCLA and later completed a master’s degree in education at Cal State. Before modeling entered the picture, she spent two years teaching elementary school, then moved into public relations with Activision, where her work included writing promotional copy connected with the Guitar Hero series.
Her route to Playboy began almost accidentally. Less than two months after joining Activision, Kim wanted to attend the Playboy Mansion’s Halloween party and submitted a photograph in hopes of getting through the door. Instead, Playboy contacted her the following day to ask whether she would consider becoming a Playmate. She shot a test in October and, roughly three weeks later, was invited back for a full pictorial.
The scheduling demands quickly forced a decision. Kim later recalled calling in sick for five days to complete the Playboy shoot and realizing that balancing the work with her Activision job was neither practical nor fair to her employer. She left the company on good terms and shifted her attention to Playboy appearances, Mansion events and related publicity, while continuing to speak positively about Guitar Hero when interviewed.
Academic interests remained important after that change. Kim returned to UCLA to study psychology and began working on a book about addiction and recovery, a subject she described as her real passion. Before Playboy, she had also been developing a book about dating in Los Angeles, but her priorities shifted toward work she felt could have a more constructive social purpose.
Kim’s interests outside work reflected both her Korean-American upbringing and her enthusiasm for gaming. She grew up in an artistic family that included a calligrapher mother, violinist father and classical-pianist brother, while at home she owned four video-game consoles and bonded with fellow Playboy model Jo Garcia over first-person shooters. In October 2008 she also appeared with Jayde Nicole, Jo Garcia and Christine Smith in the Funny or Die election parody Playmates Heat Up the Presidential Debate.
