Kayla Collins reached Playboy through MySpace, where an unlikely online connection changed the direction of her career. While still living in Pennsylvania, she added Holly Madison as a friend, and Madison contacted her after deciding that Collins had potential as a Playmate. The exchange brought Collins to Los Angeles, where her introduction to Playboy was documented during the fourth season of The Girls Next Door and led to a Playmate test.
Collins had grown up around Reading and Mohnton, Pennsylvania, where she combined cheerleading and dance with strong grades. She graduated from Twin Valley High School in 2005 and later attended Penn State University, studying business marketing for three years. Her teenage years were notably industrious: she reportedly balanced as many as five jobs at once, including work at a local tanning salon, before entertainment became a realistic professional option.
Signing her Playboy contract prompted Collins to relocate to California. She subsequently returned to The Girls Next Door during its fifth and sixth seasons, with the series following events including her centerfold shoot and 21st birthday. Get Me Out of Here!, where she was the only American contestant and wore pieces from her developing swimwear line, introducing the project to a large British television audience.
Acting added another element to Collins’s work in Los Angeles. She was cast in School Dance, directed by Nick Cannon, alongside fellow Playmate Brittany Binger, while continuing to pursue modeling, television appearances and business opportunities.
