She was born on January 8, 1987, in Salinas, California, and has also been credited as Heather Smith, Heather Rene Spratley and Heather Spratley. Playboy named her its February 2007 Playmate at 20. Her appearance came in the 2000s, as Playboy's print tradition began to share space with an expanding online presence.

Heather Rene Smith entered Playboy through its digital platform, appearing as a Cyber Club Coed of the Week in July 2006. The response to her early work led to another prominent assignment only months later, when she appeared on the cover of the October/November 2006 issue of Playboy Lingerie.
Athletics had been an important part of Smith’s life before modeling. She competed in gymnastics and developed enough skill to perform a side split on the balance beam, something Playboy incorporated into her centerfold pictorial.
