Tyran Richard came to Playboy with several years of professional modeling experience already behind her. Before her centerfold, she had spent about five years modeling lingerie for Shirley of Hollywood and had also appeared in automotive-oriented work, including a Lowrider calendar. Those assignments gave the Louisiana native an established commercial portfolio before Playboy introduced her to a much larger national audience.
Richard grew up in Zachary, a small community outside Baton Rouge, and remained strongly attached to her Southern upbringing.
