Natalia Sokolova arrived in the United States with a strong academic record already behind her. Born in Moscow to a family of academics, she had represented Russia in Japan as a Peace Child and won a language competition organized by Moscow State University. She later studied at Springbrook High School in Maryland as a foreign-exchange student before enrolling at the University of Maryland.
Her university years were interrupted by a serious car accident during her first semester. Sokolova recalled being told that she might never walk again, but intensive physical therapy and determination eventually allowed her to recover. She went on to graduate cum laude in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science in International Business and Finance, an achievement that reflected the academic ambitions she had maintained throughout her recovery.
Modeling was not originally central to Sokolova’s plans. After competing in the Hawaiian Tropics International Swimwear Pageant, however, she was approached by Playboy and decided to pursue the opportunity. She later described the decision as a deliberate break from the conservative and academically focused environment in which she had been raised. Her Playboy work continued through several videos and newsstand special editions.
Sokolova also made a number of film appearances, including small roles in Role of a Lifetime, Swordfish and Boat Trip. She eventually stepped away from modeling and returned more directly to business. In New York, she owned and operated the event-planning company Exquisite Planning, LLC and later served as Chief Financial Officer of SGG World, LLC, a company involved in connecting project owners with financial investors for developments in waste management, mining and real estate.
Her career ultimately followed a path that was much broader than modeling alone. Academic study, recovery from a major accident, Playboy, film work, entrepreneurship and finance all formed distinct stages of her professional life.
