Rosemarie Hillcrest’s route into Playboy began with an assignment that had nothing to do with modeling. While studying economics and sociology at Exeter University, she was asked to interview a millionaire for her college newspaper. Rather than choosing someone conveniently close to campus, Hillcrest crossed the Atlantic and headed for Chicago with Hugh Hefner in mind. The problem was that she had no appointment.
That did not stop her. Hillcrest went directly to the Playboy Mansion, climbed the steps and asked to see Hefner personally. Explaining that she had travelled thousands of miles for a student-journalism assignment proved persuasive enough to get her through the door and into his study. The interview was completed, but the meeting then took an unexpected turn: Hefner suggested that she test for Playboy. Hillcrest accepted, transforming a reporter’s visit into a modeling opportunity before she had even returned to England.
She later admitted that spontaneity sometimes carried her further than good sense might have advised. In this case, however, the gamble worked spectacularly well. Friends from the university rugby team had apparently encouraged the idea that she might suit Playboy, but Hillcrest still had to make the journey and create the opportunity herself. The episode says more about her than any conventional “discovery” story could: she did not wait for Playboy to find her.
For all the boldness of that adventure, Hillcrest described her long-term ambitions in considerably quieter terms. She imagined remaining healthy, keeping a youthful outlook and eventually living comfortably in the countryside. That contrast gives her story its particular charm. A student crossed an ocean, talked her way into one of America’s most famous private homes and emerged with an entirely different story from the one she had gone there to write.
