Playboy named her its February 1961 Playmate at 18. Her appearance came during the 1960s, as Playboy grew into a major force in American magazine publishing.

Barbara Ann Lawford’s Playboy story began on the way to the slopes. Playboy encountered her in a Sherman Oaks sporting-goods shop while she was buying equipment for her first ski trip and turned the outing into the theme of her pictorial. The resulting session played on the contrast between winter sport and lodge-side glamour, with Lawford learning the rituals of skiing almost as quickly as she learned what it meant to be photographed for the magazine.
Mario Casilli photographed the centerfold, bringing the clean lighting and carefully composed lines that would become closely associated with his Playboy work. Lawford’s visibility did not end with the gatefold. She returned to the magazine’s newsstand presence later that year with an appearance on the September 1961 cover, giving her photographs a second life beyond the original feature.
Playboy also carried her from California to Chicago. After the ski-weekend shoot, Lawford was invited back to the company’s headquarters and soon worked as a Bunny at the Chicago Playboy Club. That placed her inside two sides of the young Playboy empire at once: the controlled world of magazine photography and the live, highly choreographed atmosphere of the Club, where the Bunny costume had become nearly as recognizable as the centerfold itself.
Lawford stepped away from modeling in 1965. What remains is a compact early-1960s Playboy chapter: a chance encounter in a sporting-goods shop, a winter-themed pictorial, a cover appearance and a period working the Chicago Club floor. It was brief, but it captured several of the elements Playboy was rapidly turning into its own visual and social language.
