Susan Kelly is an American actress, glamour and nude model. She was born on February 15, 1938, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Playboy named her its May 1961 Playmate at 23. Her appearance came during the 1960s, as Playboy grew into a major force in American magazine publishing.

Susan Kelly had been preparing for a classroom rather than a camera. She studied education at the University of Oklahoma and initially planned to teach English, an ambition that gave her early Hollywood story an appealingly unlikely starting point. The change came when producer Albert Zugsmith noticed her and offered something rather different from a teaching post: a film contract.
Zugsmith cast Kelly as WAC Lieutenant Cahoun in Dondi, moving her directly from an education background into professional acting. The comedy did not become a major success, but the role gave her a legitimate screen credit and marked the beginning of a brief run through film and television rather than the speculative starlet career so common around Hollywood at the time.
Television supplied the rest of that screen work. Kelly appeared in episodes of Manhunt, The Joey Bishop Show and Mr. Terrific, moving between crime drama, comedy and the more playful superhero television of the 1960s. The credits were modest in number, but they gave her Playboy visibility a practical extension beyond still photography.
Frank Bez photographed Kelly’s centerfold, capturing her during the same period in which teaching plans, modeling and acting were all competing for space. What makes her story distinctive is the clean break between the life she had prepared for and the one opportunity suddenly placed in front of her: an education degree intended for the classroom became the backdrop to a short Hollywood career instead.
