Carol Willis arrived in California after deciding early that Bowie County, Texas, was unlikely to be where she would spend her life. With five stepbrothers and three sisters scattered across the country, movement already seemed to run in the family. Willis tried San Francisco before settling farther south, drawn by the combination of warm weather, coastline and mountains that made Laguna Beach feel much closer to the life she wanted.
The outdoors occupied much of her free time. Horseback riding, cycling, hiking, kite-flying and long walks by the ocean were already regular pursuits, and she talked about free-diving and skydiving as adventures she would happily try if time allowed.
