Joanie Brosas was a geek-culture dream girl before that description became fashionable. With Filipino, Dutch and German roots and a childhood spent moving from place to place with her Air Force family, she learned early how to adapt. “I learned to get along with everyone, and to like something about everything,” she told Playboy. That open-minded curiosity would eventually serve her rather well in the wonderfully obsessive world of fandom.
Her modeling career began in appropriately nerdy fashion at a Star Trek convention in 2010. What started as costume modeling at convention booths grew into a serious presence on the cosplay circuit, where Joanie became known for bringing characters from science fiction, fantasy and horror to life. Calendars, magazine covers and appearances at conventions followed, turning a genuine fan into one of the recognizable faces of cosplay culture.
By day, however, Joanie still had a regular job at a graphic software company. After work, she was more likely to be grabbing Italian food with friends, watching movies or disappearing into a book than behaving like a glamour celebrity. Star Trek remained a particular obsession, while video games and ping-pong competed for whatever free time was left. In other words, Playboy had found a bona fide geek who also happened to look terrific in costume — and out of it.
Playboy gave Brosas a new stage in November 2012, when she stepped beyond convention modeling for her Muse appearance. She approached the opportunity with the same cheerful ambition that had taken her from Star Trek booths into professional modeling. And she already knew what she wanted next: “I want to caddy at a Playboy Golf tournament,” she joked, before revealing the bigger goal. “But what I really want to be is Miss February.”
That combination of fandom, ambition and genuine girl-next-door charm made Joanie a perfect Playboy discovery for the early 2010s. She could discuss Star Trek, pick up a game controller, pose as a fantasy heroine and still dream about earning a place in Playboy’s Centerfold. Cosplay may have opened the door, but by the time Playboy’s camera found her, Joanie Brosas was clearly ready to play herself.
