Ginger Young

Playboy Playmate of The Month for May 1960

Ginger Young Bio

Ginger Young is an American glamour model, television personality, and entertainer. She was born on March 11, 1939, in Sarasota, Florida. Playboy named her its May 1960 Playmate at 21. Her appearance came during the 1960s, as Playboy grew into a major force in American magazine publishing.

Young has natural breasts, green eyes and red hair. Her measurements are 36-23-36.

Ginger Young brought an unusually strong arts background to modeling. She spent three years studying art education and put that training to practical use as an arts-and-crafts teacher, while also working as an ice-skating instructor. Painting and sculpture remained important interests away from work, joined by chess, poetry and short-story writing. For someone appearing in a glamour magazine at the beginning of the 1960s, her creative life was notably broad and hands-on.

Modeling had already carried her well beyond ordinary fashion assignments. Young appeared on numerous record-album covers for RCA, Capitol and Warner Bros., placing her image in record shops and living rooms before Playboy ever featured her. Advertising followed as well, including a television commercial for Chock full o’Nuts coffee. Those jobs required a different kind of camera presence from a centerfold: concise, commercial and designed to sell an idea as quickly as a product.

Television offered another route into entertainment. Young worked on The Steve Allen Show and The Jerry Lewis Show and also accumulated acting experience, including a credit connected with Studio 57. Acting remained one of her larger ambitions, alongside modeling and a desire to travel widely through the United States and Europe.

Her interests outside work were just as varied: progressive jazz and dancing on one side, ice skating, swimming, tennis, water skiing and fishing on the other. She also had a weakness for hot fudge sundaes—provided they were not served in stingy portions. That mixture of art school, teaching, album-cover modeling, television and sport gives Young’s Playboy-era portrait more range than the photographs alone suggest. She was already moving comfortably between several creative worlds and clearly had no intention of choosing only one.
