At 19, Miki Hamano left Japan for the United States with limited English and little idea of what life abroad would demand. She spent three years in Palm Desert before moving to San Francisco, where she completed a business degree. The move became an education well beyond the classroom, and she later described the difficulty of navigating a new country and language as part of what made the experience exciting.
Modeling followed after graduation and soon became full-time work. Hamano collaborated with brands including Honey Birdette and appeared in magazines such as Vulkan and The Forest Magazine. Travel became one of the pleasures attached to the profession; she spoke enthusiastically about meeting people around the world and eventually came to regard California as home.
Los Angeles initially presented a different kind of challenge.
