Kelly was born in Philadelphia and grew up in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains after her family relocated there during her childhood. She is one of five sisters and was raised in an Italian Catholic family. An active athlete from an early age, she participated in soccer, swimming, track and field, softball, and school theatre. Her mother, a former figure-skating instructor, taught Kelly and her sisters to skate, while her family’s outdoor lifestyle introduced her to hiking, fishing, camping, climbing, and horseback riding.
