Kathryn Morrison was less interested in explaining herself than in getting on with whatever came next. Asked to talk about her life for Playboy, she joked that another photograph might do the job better. What she did describe was a life organized around movement, water and changing scenery. Having lived in 13 different towns across the Southwest as a student before settling in Los Angeles, she had already grown accustomed to treating one place as temporary rather than permanent.
Water was the constant. Morrison spoke of the beaches north of Los Angeles and the pool at the old Knickerbocker with the enthusiasm of someone who could happily spend hours floating. Her appetite for activity stretched much further: sailing, scuba diving and freeboarding in Hawaii, a New Year’s weekend in Acapulco, rock climbing in Northern California and skiing at Mammoth. “If it’s got energy, I love it,” she told Playboy, summing up a schedule that rarely seemed to stand still.

At that point, she was still discovering which pursuits would remain temporary adventures and which might become lasting parts of her life.
For all that movement, Morrison also had a quieter picture of independence in mind: a small cabin in one of the canyons, warmed by a potbellied stove and a wood fire she could build herself. It is an appealing contrast to the restless travel elsewhere in her story. Her Playboy interview captured someone not presenting a carefully polished life plan, but enjoying the freedom to keep changing it.
