Born to an American military father and a Belgian actress mother, Hedy moved frequently as a child due to her father's career. After his death in Korea in 1953, her mother returned to Brussels, where Hedy was raised. She later moved to the United States, arriving on a war-bride ship with her mother. As her father was a U.S. soldier, she was an American citizen by birth.
In Los Angeles, Hedy worked various jobs, including as a theater candy girl in Beverly Hills and a part-time model for Hollywood fashion designer Charles Gallet. At the time of her Playboy centerfold shoot, she juggled modeling work and TV guest spots to afford her Los Angeles apartment and '56 Thunderbird.
Following her Playboy appearance, Hedy pursued a brief acting career, making a guest appearance on "The Munsters" and landing a small role in the 1966 racing film "Fireball 500."
