Hope Olson spent her early years on her grandfather’s farm in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, an upbringing that remained central to the personality Playboy presented to readers. She lived there until she was 15 before eventually attending high school in California. Farm life gave her a lasting preference for open spaces, fresh air and informality, and she spoke nostalgically about an environment where appearances and fashionable clothes mattered considerably less than simply being comfortable.
California introduced Olson to an entirely different landscape. The Pacific Ocean was considerably less forgiving than the lakes she knew from Wisconsin, and her first attempts at surfing ended with wipeouts and sand burns.
