Deanna Baker’s route to Playboy began with a deliberate change of scenery. In 1969, she left a hometown of fewer than 20,000 people for Denver, Colorado, looking for greater independence and a more adventurous life. Finding the right place to live was an immediate concern—somewhere with a good view, but also somewhere she would feel secure as a young woman living alone in an unfamiliar city.
In Denver, Baker became a Playboy Bunny at the Denver Playboy Club, giving her a direct connection with the company before she ever appeared in the magazine. The job placed her inside the distinctive world of Playboy Clubs, where Bunnies served as the highly recognizable public face of the brand.
