Joey Heatherton grew up inside American show business. Her father, Ray Heatherton, was a Broadway performer and the host of the popular children’s television program The Merry Mailman, while her mother had worked as a dancer. Joey began studying ballet as a child before adding jazz, voice and acting to her training. At 15, she joined the original Broadway production of The Sound of Music as an ensemble performer and understudy, while appearances on Perry Como’s television program introduced her lively personality to a national audience.
Television proved to be the ideal setting for Heatherton’s particular combination of movement, music and playful glamour. Throughout the 1960s, she became a familiar presence on variety programs and entertainment specials, appearing alongside performers such as Perry Como, Dean Martin and Bob Hope. The televised Christmas specials brought those performances into millions of homes and showed her as a fearless live entertainer who could sing and dance under demanding conditions. Heatherton also pursued dramatic acting and recording. Her film roles included Twilight of Honor, Where Love Has Gone and the 1965 psychological thriller My Blood Runs Cold, in which she starred opposite Troy Donahue. In 1977, she took the leading role of Xaviera Hollander in The Happy Hooker Goes to Washington. Two decades later, Playboy revisited her distinctive appeal with the April 1997 pictorial titled “Pal Joey,” presenting her as a celebrity feature rather than a Playmate of the Month.
