The First Playboy Playmate Year

The Playboy archive begins in December 1953, with the first issue of the magazine and the first Playmate feature. Hugh Hefner assembled that debut issue in Chicago with a modest budget, borrowed money, and no certainty that a second issue would ever follow.

At the center of the debut was Marilyn Monroe, whose calendar image gave the new magazine instant star power. Her appearance helped define Playboy's original mix of glamour, celebrity, editorial confidence, and modern men's-magazine style.

The first issue sold out within weeks and reached a circulation of 53,991, establishing Playboy as a new kind of publication: provocative, polished, witty, and aspirational. It was not only a centerfold magazine, but also a lifestyle statement built around entertainment, fiction, interviews, humor, and visual style.

That unexpected success made 1953 the starting point for the entire Playboy Playmates timeline. The archive begins here, with Marilyn Monroe and a debut issue that turned a small Chicago publishing gamble into a cultural landmark.
