Lace Rose Allenius made her Playboy entrance in the 2004 Girls of the ACC pictorial, representing Florida State University with exactly the combination Playboy wanted from its college features: brains, beauty and enough social confidence to make campus considerably more interesting. The international affairs major proved popular enough to return as Coed of the Week for December 9, 2004.
Her Playboy debut certainly didn't hurt her social calendar. Once the Girls of the ACC pictorial appeared, Lace suddenly found herself receiving invitations to parties all over FSU. She was particularly fond of the “Tennessee Waltz,” a Tallahassee tradition in which students celebrating their 21st birthday gathered friends, chose a theme, dressed for the occasion and worked their way through the bars along the Tennessee Strip. It was exactly the kind of college ritual Playboy could appreciate.
But Allenius had ambitions beyond campus celebrity. She later landed an internship at Good Morning America, where it didn't take long for curious coworkers to discover that their new blonde intern had a Playboy past. According to Playboy, staff members began pulling up her pictorials at work, prompting GMA to circulate a memo reminding employees that viewing nudity on company computers was unacceptable. Not every college intern manages to inspire a workplace policy reminder.
Lace attracted attention away from the office as well. She was romantically linked to actor Matt Dillon for two years, adding a little Hollywood intrigue to a life already moving between Florida State, Playboy and network television. Yet the most interesting part of her story remained the contrast: the woman creating a minor stir inside a major morning show had arrived there as a serious international affairs student building professional experience.
That contrast made Allenius one of the more memorable characters from Playboy’s mid-2000s Coed era. She went from Girls of the ACC and FSU party invitations to Coed of the Week and a Good Morning America internship — then somehow managed to get her Playboy photographs noticed there, too.
