Hayden Hayes found Playboy the way any good college story should begin: in the student newspaper. A communications major at the University of Washington, she spotted an ad announcing that Playboy was coming to Seattle in search of women for its Girls of the Pac-10 feature. Curious and already intrigued by the idea of posing for the magazine, Hayden decided there was only one sensible thing to do — answer it.
“I always thought it would be cool to do Playboy,” she admitted. “But I never thought it would actually come true.” Playboy thought otherwise. Hayes made the Girls of the Pac-10 pictorial and went on to become Coed of the Week for December 20, 2010. The readers weren't finished with her, either: she was later voted Coed of the Month for August 2011.
Campus life gave Playboy plenty of material to work with. Hayden enjoyed the University of Washington social scene and was particularly fond of fraternity parties. Her favorite was the foam party, where bathing suits became the unofficial dress code and everyone was encouraged to abandon whatever dignity they'd brought through the door. “Everyone shows up in their bathing suits and goes wild!” she explained. Playboy could hardly have written the scene better.
Hayes was equally democratic about the men who caught her eye. Football players, fraternity guys, artists — labels didn't matter much as long as the man underneath was attractive, playful and capable of making her laugh. “I’m attracted to them all as long as they’re gorgeous, silly and can make me laugh,” she told Playboy. On a campus full of potential candidates, that still left plenty of studying to do.
What makes Hayden’s Playboy story so perfectly of its era is how casually it began. One newspaper ad led to a casting, Girls of the Pac-10, Coed of the Week and eventually a Coed of the Month title. She may have been surprised when Playboy called, but by August 2011 the surprise belonged to anyone who hadn't noticed her. Hayden Hayes answered a little ad in the college paper — and ended up becoming exactly the kind of campus discovery Playboy was hoping to find.
