Candice Boucher’s modeling career began unexpectedly during her final year of school in South Africa. At seventeen, friends persuaded her to enter her high school’s annual beauty pageant; she won, along with a photo shoot with a local photographer. Those photographs were sent to Models International, which offered her representation. After finishing school, Boucher left Durban for Cape Town and began modeling professionally, with assignments eventually taking her around the world.
Her portfolio grew to include Cosmopolitan, FHM, GQ, Elle, Fila and Speedo, while Sports Illustrated became another important part of her career. In 2009, Boucher secured one of her highest-profile fashion assignments when she became a Guess model. She appeared in the brand’s Fall/Winter 2009 and Spring/Summer 2010 campaigns, photographed by Raphael Mazzucco. By then, she had developed the international fashion career that had begun with that teenage pageant.
Playboy added a very different assignment in 2010. Boucher traveled to Kenya for the African-themed pictorial “Undressed in Africa,” which appeared with her April cover. Photographed in the Kenyan wilderness, the ambitious production placed her among African landscapes and wildlife. Boucher later described the ten-day shoot as one of the best experiences of her life, while also emphasizing that she agreed to it only after considerable thought and because the circumstances, photographer and crew felt right.
The same year brought another major magazine milestone when Boucher appeared on the October cover of Sports Illustrated’s South African swimwear edition, photographed in Mauritius. Her career then moved toward film. She already had connections with India through advertising work, including campaigns for Liril and Lee Jeans, when director Prashant Chadha cast her as Afreen in Aazaan. The international action film, shot across several countries, became her feature-film debut in 2011.
Boucher’s career consequently moved through several distinct stages: a school pageant in Durban led to professional representation, Cape Town opened the door to international fashion, Guess gave her a major global campaign, and Playboy and Sports Illustrated made 2010 a particularly visible year.
