Elizabeth Ward Gracen’s public career began in pageantry, where she competed under her birth name, Grace Elizabeth Ward. After winning Miss Arkansas in 1981, she represented the state at the Miss America competition and was crowned Miss America 1982. The title gave the young Arkansas native a year of national appearances and international travel, but she viewed pageantry as a beginning rather than a permanent identity. Once her reign ended, Gracen moved to New York, studied acting and later relocated to California to pursue film and television professionally.
